"Rakestraw Books is a
gem: small,
perfect, and the more you peer into it, endlessly deep. The love of good books animates and inspires the place;
the staff is passionate and smart --
every visit offers equal measures of entertainment and instruction. And
Michael Barnard may just be the best bookseller in the Bay Area -- which,
given the competition, is high praise indeed." --- Michael Chabon

BOOKPOST #95 -- August 2008
Dear
Friend of Rakestraw Books,
I'm sitting here alone in the shop, putting the last touches
on this issue of "Bookpost" and waiting for several dozen
teenage girls to show up at 10:30 PM to celebrate the
publication of Breaking Dawn by Stephenie Meyer. It's
something of a change from last night's dinner with
Georgeanne Brennan attended by 70+ food-loving adults. And,
yet, both events have something in common. Each demonstrates
the passionate love of books and reading in this community
that we call Rakestraw Books. It's a pleasure to be part of
that fully-engaged community. Even if last night's
garlic-rich meal might have scared tonight's vampire fans!
In this issue of "Bookpost," I am continuing with a new,
briefer format for both event listings and with the book
reviews. For the events, I am presenting a quick snapshot of
what's up and why you should care. For the reviews, I am
trying to convey in brief the essence of the book. Those of
you who took the time to let me know what you think (thank
you to all!) liked the new leaner "Bookpost," so we're going
to stick with it. [I promise this is the last time I will
run this boilerplate paragraph!]
You all helped make our author visits in July some of our
best ever, and I just know that you're going to enjoy
visiting with some of August's fantastic authors -- Ann
Patchett, David Ebershoff, and more. And, of course,
everyday there will be new books as the Fall 2008 launches.
Thanks for being a part of our community here at Rakestraw
Books -- the "books and mortar" version and out in
cyberspace as well. Come see us soon and, until then, Happy
Reading!
Sincerely yours,
The Staff of Rakestraw Books
