Welcome to Rakestraw Books!

Dear Friends of Rakestraw Books,
Thanks to all of you for your part in making April a terrific month here at Rakestraw Books! The first-ever Danville Library Endowment Fund was a great success. We raised more than $5000! And the events of the past few days -- Alex Beard, Caroline Leavitt and Anne Lamott, Kristi Yamaguchi -- were great fun.
Without doubt the highlight of the month was World Book Night. Underwritten by publishers, printers, and authors alike, more than 50 Rakestraw customers joined thousands of Americans in giving out books around the community. Each giver gave out twenty copies of one of their favorite books -- drawn from a great list -- to people, mostly strangers, they thought would enjoy them. And, the stories we have heard back have been wonderful: Afghani cab drivers at Dublin sitting on the hoods of their cabs reading The Kite Runner; prisoners at Santa Rita enjoying the first books some of them have ever owned; ill children at Children's Hospital eagerly turning the pages of Because of Winn Dixie. It was an amazing day! If you'd like to hear more of these powerful stories, please feel free to join us on Monday, 30 April 2012 at 7 PM at the World Book Night Recap Party!
Looking ahead, I think the next few weeks are going to be wonderful ones here at the bookstore. We have a great mix of authors -- some local, some not, some very celebrated indeed, others less well-known than they will be. I am not going to call out highlights, because they're all worth looking out and there is all the news on each visit below. I've also included book group news, an update on the Signed First Editions Club, and more.
Everyone here at Rakestraw Books joins me in thanking you for your continuing support of the work we do -- talking about books, selling books, and sharing the love of stories in our community.
We look forward to seeing you soon. Until then, Happy Reading!
Sincerely yours,
Michael Barnard & the Staff
