Complete Calendar of Upcoming Events

ImageIn the interests of space, I have moved the complete calendar of upcoming events to our website www.rakestrawbooks.com (there's a quick link below -- updates to follow).

Two recently added highlights: on Friday, 17 October 2008 at 7 PM, we will be hosting a talk by renowned fashion designer Isaac Mizrahi, author of How to Have Style. I am thinking of all sorts of extras for this one (maybe to benefit Wardrobe for Opportunity). On Tuesday, 21 October, we are going to host a luncheon for Mem Fox, author of Reading Magic: Why Reading Aloud to Our Children Will Change Their Lives Forever (details to follow).

And, just added ten minutes ago -- Diane Johnson is coming to visit in October as we celebrate the publication of her new novel Lulu in Marrakech.

There is much more, so check out the whole shebang by clicking below.

Book Group News from Julie

For the first time ever The Morning Group is taking a field trip! We will meet on Saturday, 26 July 2008 at Noon to discuss An Ideal Husband by Oscar Wilde. This special meeting will take place during our visit to the Bruns Amphitheater and CalShakes. Group members are asked to bring something to share for a potluck picnic. Following lunch and our discussion, we will be seeing the play in a special matinée performance. Tickets are $30 and reservations must be made through Julie at the shop as soon as possible.

If you have any questions about this book group, please call us at (925) 837-7337.

Julie says, "We try to read good books you might not pick out for yourself. And we talk about it, and talk about it, bringing our own lives and that of the author to bear on the subject at hand. Join us!"

Also, remember that either Julie or Michael are happy to talk to your book group about books. Visits last about an hour and your group will come away with a couple dozen great suggestions for future reading. Let us know if you are interested in arranging for one of these special programs!

If you're interested in learning more about this wonderful discussion group, then click here to email Julie.

Politics and Marriage Make for Strange Bedfellows

ImageAN IDEAL HUSBAND
JULY 2 - 27

BY OSCAR WILDE
DIRECTED BY JONATHAN MOSCONE

An unwelcome visit from the past calls the future into question for a successful and happily married politician. Behind Wilde's trademark razor-sharp wit lies a profound observation of the illusions we use to deceive others and -- more importantly -- ourselves. Artistic Director Jonathan Moscone, fresh from his acclaimed production of Man and Superman, directs Wilde's timely comedy.

Seeing a play at the Bruns is one of the best cultural experiences in the Bay Area. The place, the performances, and the plays combine to create magic. And, to see a play as witty as this one by a director this good . . . . that's just a delight.

Tickets are still available for An Ideal Husband and the rest of the season. See you at the Bruns . . . .

Museum of Craft and Folk Art

ImageOne of San Francisco's most interesting small museums is the Museum of Craft and Folk Art located directly across the lane from the entrance of the Jewish Museum, near Yerba Buena Gardens.

The current exhibit is the perfect way to celebrate America's independence: American Symbols: From Lady Liberty to the Stars & Stripes (May 9—August 3, 2008).

The Museum of Craft and Folk Art presents American Symbols: From Lady Liberty to the Stars and Stripes, an exploration of the graphic history of the flag, the eagle, the shield, Uncle Sam, and Lady Liberty as used in craft, folk art, and design as well as Native American art, trade and popular art. The more than 75 fascinating items on display are owned by San Francisco resident Kit Hinrichs, an internationally renowned graphic designer and partner in Pentagram Design. Hinrichs has spent over 40 years seeking out intriguing objects to add to his remarkable collection. The Museum is honored to feature a portion of it in this exhibition.
