Independent Bookstore Day 2019

Independent Bookstore Day marks its fifth year of celebrating independent bookstores nationwide on Saturday, April 27th, with literary parties at more than 550 bookstores around the country. Here at Rakestraw Books we have all sorts of fun planned including a special reader's prescription service, a sale on staff favorites, and a special opportunity to support kids and reading.

The 2019 IBD author ambassador Tayari Jones, author of An American Marriage, says, “Indie stores stock books by hand and sell them the same way.  They know what we want and need to read because they know us, as people. A writer is not a machine.  A reader is not an app.  We are human beings and so are the independent bookstore workers who show up each day and place books in our hands.”

Independent Bookstore Day is proud to announce a selection of exclusive books and art pieces for Bookstore Day 2019. Many of these limited edition, unique items will be available at Rakestraw Books, on April 27. Not before. Not online. And not in chain stores. Among the special items that will be available starting at 9 AM on Independent Bookstore Day are:

  • Show off your favorite authors -- including Neil Gaiman; Margaret Atwood; and others --  with these laser-cut wooden pins. An IBD-exclusive from Letter Craft that will never be available again. Specs: ¾" x 1", Baltic birch plywood, silver pin back with butterfly clasp.
  • A special Independent Bookstore Day exclusive autographed copy of Ada Twist and the Perilous Pants signed by bestselling author Andrea Beaty and a collectible embroidered iron-on patch of stellar scientist Ada Twist are the perfect gifts for curious readers everywhere and fans of The Questioneers!
  • Acerbic, funny, tender, sorrowful and wise, Women Talking is composed of equal parts humane love and deep anger. It is award-winning writer Miriam Toews' most astonishing novel to date, containing within its two short days and hayloft setting an expansive, timeless universe of thinking and feeling about women--and men--in our contemporary world. This special IBD edition has an unique cover and is signed by author Miriam Toews.

We look forward to celebrating Independent Bookstore Day 2019 with you. Please come join the fun!
